Road Tripping Route 101-The Oregon Coast
Road Tripping Route 101-The Oregon Coast
Looking for a road trip that will fill you with awe? One that combines all the elements of majestically beautiful scenery, breathtaking wonders of nature and amazing sightseeing? Start off an RV road trip in Astoria, and begin a trip down the Oregon Coast on Highway 101, that will inspire and thrill you. While there, stop in at the Columbia River Maritime Museum, take a tour through a winery and satisfy your tastebuds at one of the many great seafood restaurants. Of course a trip down the Coast would not be complete if you didn’t stop in Cannon Beach…a marvelous seaside village with beautiful coastline and the very popular Haystack Rock. Make sure you have your camera ready as the sights are truly amazing. Drive your RV through to Tillamook and stock your fridge with some famous and exceptional cheese from the factory there. From there, head to Cape Meares State Park to check out the Octopus Tree…an ancient tree that is said to be from the time of Christ. Back on Highway 101, continue on to Newport and stop at the Oregon Coast Aquarium, where you can tough small sea creatures and walk through a tunnel aptly named the Passages of the Deep to view sharks, fish and sea otters. Back outside you may see migrating whales ( March through May) and get a chuckle watching the playful sea otters. Pack up the RV again and head towards Florence. On this route, you will experience breathtaking views and ancient lava flows in Cape Perpetua and stop to take photos of the Heceta Head Lighthhouse. If you can handle the noise, then stop at the Sea Lion Caves to view the very loud, boisterous sea lions there. If you are adventurous, the next stop would be at the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area. Rent an ATV and spend the day or a few days zooming amongst the miles and miles of gigantic sand dunes. Do you want to feel just like you are on a tropical island? If so, then you will need to continue in your RV along the 101 until you get to Brookings, where its warm enough for palm trees to survive all year round. To round out your trip, every road trip enthusiast must visit the Redwood Forest and view the majestic trees. There are many sections to the vast Redwood Forest but many RV’ers head to Leggett, CA to view the tree that is famously photographed depicting a car driving through it. In order to avoid overwhelming traffic and the nastiness of winter driving, the best time to make this trip would be either May/June or early September, and a week minimum is what one should plan for. Happy RV’ing!!
